“Is everything OK, Kathy?”
“Yeah, Tex. Franco’s just being a prick.”
“Franco?”
“Capital P, Tex,”she concluded.” With a capital P.”
Tex took Franco’s beer away and went into the back room.
“And besides,” she continued, “Why do you think you could just step in whenever you feel like it when I’ve obviously been spending my time with Derek?”
“You think Derek’s good enough for you?”
“I think that’s the sort of question that proves you’re not good enough to be judging him.”
“You don’t know—“
“I don’t know he has a criminal record? He told me that my first ten minutes here. You’re a fine one to talk, since you’ve gone on public record your own father should have been arrested long ago. Do you think your family is better than Derek’s just because you can buy and sell half the state of Montana? Do you think you can just waltz in and flash your smile and women will fall into bed with you? I tell you, Mr. Delgato—that pretty much describes someone who’s not good enough for me.”
She got up just as Derek was walking through the swinging doors. “Derek,” she said, walking towards him, “I have this overwhelming desire to head into town. Would you mind driving me?” He looked surprised, taking in Franco’s scowl, and said nothing, but followed her outside.
“I’d say you’re losing your touch, pretty boy,” Franco heard Tex say behind him.
“What’s Derek got that I haven’t?” Franco asked the swinging doors.
“You want the advice of a gay bartender? In my experience listening to countless customers pour their hearts out while I pour their drinks, a lot of women want a strong man who doesn’t hesitate to take charge. Other women like a bird with a broken wing—someone vulnerable they can help become a better person. I can’t be sure, but I think I just saw you try the Alpha shit you and your father pull off so well, and I then watched Kathy walk away with someone who’s never going to be in charge of anything, but maybe, just maybe—with the love of a good woman, could become something more than he is—more than anyone ever expected him to be. I didn’t think gold could tarnish, Franco,” Tex finished, walking away to take some orders, “but you’re looking mighty green.”
